As predicted, Skype v2.0 with video functionality has launched before the holidays.
Skype Video is available only for Windows users currently (and the compression technology they are using is windows only, which could significantly delay an Mac version).
While video functionality is great, I’d actually much prefer the ability to share applications (browser, powerpoint, excel, etc.) through Skype, making it significantly more useful for business calls. In other grumblings, Om Malik ponders whether independent developers will continue to build for Skype, since they tend to subsume the better ideas (Festoon, Skylook, etc).

A shame that it’s windows only. But I don’t have an eyesight yet, anyway. Anywho, I hope the developers over at Skype HQ now have enough time on their hands for a ‘record’-button. You have any idea how much of an effort it is (using virtual sound devices and such) just to record a skype call?
Cool my fried.
As every one knows, Most of the people use windows. So if you are responsible which one would you buold it for. One with a large user base or smaller one..
Think my friend. mac will follow soon.
Vijay
Agreed. I’d like to see online meeting functionality integrated into skype.
Skype is committed to Mac users so video is under development but no timetable to offer at this time. In fact, just today Skype released its 1.4 beta version for Mac users with lots of cool new features, including
Skype for Mac 1.4 (Beta)!
Skype for Mac now has:
Call Forwarding
Mood Messages
New Sounds
New Cool Sign-In Process
New Graphics
Fancy Menu Bar Item
Remember Chats Functionality
Pausing of iTunes when a call comes in
and loads of bug fixes for the Mac people of the world
Skype is the latest in a series of companies embracing a teenybopperish upgrade path — Weemees? — while shunning enterprise applications and potential Office-killers. Outlook integration is a good example. Sure, people are talking about the death of e-mail as a collaborative tool, but no one seems to be doing anything to make any of its alternatives as versatile.
Movable Type moved in much the same direction. Instead of moving towards a more robust platform for community enterprise blogging, and beginning to challenge low-end CMS vendors, instead they decide to become another 360 or MySpace.
I understand that they cannot support video for the other operating systems all at the same time, so I expect that video will come soon for mac (and for linux too, I hope). What I dislike is that they’re using this “windows only” video compression technology. This may doom the video release for other platforms.
Hi Mike,
I once sent you a link to a cool app I like and you said you won’t write about it because it’s not web 2.0 (although it has user-related features, tags, ajax, …)
hm, now I’m wondering what’s web 2.0 about skype except that it’s version 2.0 ?
Best regards, Nader
