Yeah, Songbird looks very beautiful.
But without the EQUALIZER, it just sucks!
Just try your favorite song with Songbird and the same song with an equalized iTunes... See?
No comparison.
Not to say that I like iTunes though.

Songbird looks very promising indeed.
But, come on, without a graphical equalizer it is certainly not going to steal iTunes market share.
I'm sure people will miss it sooner or later.
I missed it after 5 seconds already during my first try.

[...] The fact that that concept never occurred to me upsets me to no end. I’d like to blame it on their misrepresentation of the product, but it’s far more likely that I’m simply dense. In investigating the Songbird build, I really should have discovered this commentary from Mike Arrington: One thing to clear up is that Songbird is not an online application - it is (among other things) a next generation media player. And it is absolutely turning my head around in the way I think about certain things. [...]

[...] This is probably one of the coolest little applications I’ve seen in a long time. Songbird is an open source music player built on the Firefox platform.
[...] Songbird is a desktop media player from the same guys that developed Winamp and Yahoo! music engine. Songbird is built atop the Mozilla platform for cross-platform extensibility.
Ok so now I get XUL after reading Songbird's explanation. The only downside i see with it is that it still focuses on the desktop based application. Many many more projects are sprouting up to avoid the reliance on desktop apps so they can be more "portable." Now having a desktop companion or something that backs everything up to the web and thus becomes a desktop/web hybrid app is what really intrigues me about this XUL. Seeing as people still have to deal with their net connections going out, the XUL desktop app paired with the web based version would make sense.

sorry to go off in another direction unrelated to songbird.

[...] At first it only looked like a black iTunes, but Songbird is really looking interesting. All I have to go on are the screenshots and this post at TechCrunch, but I am eagerly awaiting the December public beta to see what’s under the hood. Since it is XUL based and more open than iTunes, expect a large number of plug-ins and extensions to really do some wild new things in the frustratingly stagnant world of media players. Seriously, I’ve been trying to get rid of Winamp and iTunes for years, but nothing has even mildly impressed me (foobar was close, but I don’t have weeks to spend fiddling with software to make it work like I want it to). At this point, Songbird has a very low bar to clear to become the best of breed media player.
I anticipate the release of this application. Why? Because it's built with XUL, includes plugins and is cross-platform. This opens many possibilties for further customization.

I currently use a not so well known application called Quod Libet http://www.sacredchao.net/quodlibet/wiki along with Streamtuner http://www.nongnu.org/streamtuner/.

I hate having the multiple applications open to listen to these streams. I would prefer them in one nice interface.

[...] Finally, what looks like a media player/jukebox worth downloading. I was reading through my daily list of blogs and came across an entry on one of my favorite blogs, Techcrunch. It was a post about something called Songbird. Well Mike at Techcrunch is in the alpha for it, but he has been asked not to say hardly anything about it. So of course I had to follow the link to the Songbird website to learn more about it. Basically it seems like it is just another media player that looks eerily similar to iTunes, only black. I can live with that though, as it stands I think the look of Songbird is really nice, at least from the screenshots I have seen. It seems though they are adding a twist to the normal media player setup though. They want it to integrate with “digital media network services” such as Odeo and Last.fm. It should be interesting to see how it all turns out. I hope to get in on the preview as soon as it’s available to give it a test drive.
