[...] Pandora lets you listen to entire songs–rather than short clips of songs like some other services–and through its Flash-based player, allows you to easily purchase any song you hear from Amazon or iTunes. When you first log in to your account, Pandora asks you to list the name of a song or artist you enjoy. Pandora then creates a radio station for you based on similar songs and artists. Don’t like one of the songs Pandora plays? Click the “I don’t like it” button, and Pandora will remove it from the station. Really like one of the songs you hear? Click the “I like it” button. Pandora remembers your likes and dislikes, and adjusts the songs in your radio station accordingly. Pandora comes in two flavors: a subscription-based service ($36/year or $12/month) and an ad-supported version. [At present I have yet to hear any ads, but according to Pandora’s Website, they will be adding them in the coming months.] I can’t help but wonder if this is the model television will adopt: viewers can watch a program with ads, or pay for it and watch it without ads.
[...] After reading the TechCrunch review on Pandora, I checked it out and have been listening to it for a few days now. It’s awesome. Pandora is a flash-based online streaming music player. It’s based on the Music Genome Project. Here’s how it works: type in the name of a group, artist, or song, and Pandora will play that music plus it will find other similar groups, artists, and songs based on the findings of the previously mentioned Music Genome Project, and then create a station based on those findings. You can then add more songs or artists to that station or create an additional separate station, up to 100 stations. The best feature it has is that it is absolutely free without any audio ads either (there are some text ads). The sound quality is suprisingly good also. In the past, I have used Yahoo!’s version of online streaming music, and Pandora seems to sound much better. [...]

[...] First, I saw this post over at TechCrunch mentioning that Pandora now had a free/ad-supported option. I’d never heard of it, but the author’s comments and obvious enthusiasm were enough to intrigue me. But down in the comments for that blog I saw mention to Last.fm, another one I’d never heard of… Well, as I’m constantly on a quest for new/varied music (have I mentioned I love my xmRadio?), I figured both of these needed a look.
pandora radio sharing

Their sharing feature is still a little lacking. Tagdora will allow people to publically share and tag their radio stations on del.icio.us. Join in and send Tagdora (share@tagdora.com) your favorite station.

[...] For instance, I am listening to Pandora here on my speakers while I work. Great service (and it’s now free, thanks TechCrunch for telling us that!) but I’d pay for a Windows application rather than having a Web based one. Why? I’d rather it be hidden on my task bar instead of being forced to take a browser window open. I’d pay for that capability. Also, I’d buy a subscription if it could put songs onto my computer for playing on my portable music device. Time shifting is really a big deal with this kind of service (I’m going to be stuck in a plane for two hours tomorrow and would like to have some new music to listen to there, why can’t Pandora supply it? I’d even pay $3 for two hours of music). [...]

This still doesn't solve their problem of having a limited set of tracks and being based on "characteristics" of the music. Last.fm provides a far better approach to recomendations, and it's been free since the very beginning.

Wow, did not know about Pandora, and it is definitely cool. I just switched from my iTunes radio....so far so good... does not seem to have too much add (if at all). It if works for me, I might think about taking a subscription.

Thanks for the news.
