[...] Anil Dash wants Flickr to pay users for interesting photos. But in many ways, it’s already happening elsewhere. TechCrunch reports on newcomer Fotolia, which seems like a more modern-looking version of iStockPhoto, with some clever new features. Unlike most startups that get branded “web 2.0″, these guys have a clear business model (buying and selling photos), but they also want to pay users who give photos away for free. How can they afford that? By advertising directly on the thumbnails, apparently. The service is called Adthumb, and I’m keen to see if they can make it work. They also have an affiliate scheme - you earn a percentage whenever someone you refer buys or sells photos. TechCrunch writes: Fotolia is a site where photographers can sell their images directly to consumers. They offer only royalty free images (Getty Images, for instance, offers a mix of royalty free and rights managed images). Photographers keep up to 80% of fees. [...]

I like the idea to sell my photos in many countries and the marketplace is really well done.

This is a real viable business model as I'm tired of the royalty-free images you can get from corbis, getty, etc.

I for one is definately interested in this service and will be ready to purchase if I find images that are unique and beautiful.

Thanks for letting me know about this site, Michael!

the term "p2p ecommerce site" is a bit misleading. fotolia is following the micropayment business model pioneered by <a href="http://www.istockphoto.com/" rel="nofollow">istockphoto</a>, and which has quite a few other followers. While it does allow buyers to become contributors and vice-versa, it is not really peer-to-peer, as much as a platform for many many photographers to sell their images through one centralized place.

[...] TechCrunch mentioned a new stock photo web site Fotolia.com, now count how many buzz words you can find: New York based Fotolia is a new, specialized p2p ecommerce site that combines an innovative business model with Ajax, tagging, rss and great design. The site is very well designed, and they’ve integrated Ajax previews of images along with photographer tagging of images for easier searching.
