Netvibes - Personal homepage

netvibes Netvibes, a project started in France by Florant Fremont, is the latest web-app based on the idea of personalized homepages and like some others (like Start and Google’s personal homepage), it is powered by some nicely developed Ajax. Their goal is best put in their own words, so quoting their blog post about the launch on the 8th september,

The aim of it is to provide a place on the internet where you can set just the content you like, a super easy way of building your personnalized homepage, available anywhere, anytime. No registration is needed, however if you want to access your page from another computer you’ll be able to do it by registering with your email address and a password.

The project itself looks pretty good: modules are intuitive and the page interaction’s easy to catch up on with just a few seconds. There are a few other things on the slate too, apparently, like modules for Flickr, feed searching, bookmarks, etc (a proper list is available on their blog). All in all, while it is another solution for a problem that many people are tackling, Netvibes looks like a pretty good Ajax-based homepage, so you should definitely check it out and take your conclusions.

Ed. note: And it’s nice to see Techcrunch as one of the default feeds too. We’re honored.

Netvibes is definitely the best Ajax page going. Better than Windows Live, that’s for sure. It’s easy, it’s fast and it just works.

I kept watching netvibes for a while and still didn’t get it - what does it try to do other than the same thing My Yahoo! or Personalized Google homepage etc can do (better in my opinion). Can somebody explain the point?

Both the Nervibes and Box.net are in win-2 situation from this offering …

It’s technically true that Netvibes essentially does the same thing as any personalized h-page, but it just has that super-slick AJAX interface - not to mention a cool independent vibe. Love it.

It is not the same as Live, My Yahoo, or a Personalized Google homepage because it offers different functionalities and has a completely different feel. That’s like saying why bother with a mac OS, lets all just all use windows or Linux. Like TG said, it’s slick and it works, the other are plain ole’ ugly.

Goowy beats all these guys hands down. Better email, and a great calendar.

Netvibes appear to be using Referer Spam in order to increase their hit count. According to my webalizer, they are my top referrer this month which seems strange when they have no links to my content.

Zax, let me guess - you have RSS feeds on your site?

Maybe users add the feeds to their pages and then go to your site?

Gosh, people can be so dense.

I find Pageflakes works the best (www.pageflakes.com). I can look up my weather, up coming events in my area and I can play around with colour. Netvibes is too cold for me

I’ve never found sites like these interesting. Like you I wonder where the market is for it. I think time will show that it’s just not a good business model.
