I like PB wiki (Dropping Out of the Blogosphere) and JotSpot (Future Blog & Blog History Timeline), and am starting a Socialtext wiki today.

Thanks for starting this topic.

I am working on Open Source Government wikis right now (in early stages of experimentation).

If anyone is looking for a powerful and free wiki -

http://www.wikidot.com

is certainly a good shot. As far as I have compared other wikis - it is outstanding but somehow "geek-oriented". It is surprising they were never mentioned on techcrunch... Perhaps it is just a new service... But worth trying!

Hi. I was doing a search re: collaborative editing/wiki's via Google and came across your site. Just want to say thanks to those commenting, and particularly Soobrosa. I wasn't happy w/ Writeboard (traded a few e-mails w/ highly helpful support staff though); barebones formatting and seemingly doesn't make functional hyperlinks. PBwiki, TWiki and other free wiki's seem to lack useful 'version history' and 'compare versions' tools. *Think I've found answer at http://www.wikispaces.com/. Nice formatting, easy to insert links, good editing tracking tools. Thanks for pointing me in right direction and helping me to help my client...

i just set up a wiki for a professional group at school. there seems to be no way for anyone to "comment" on what they read on the wiki page unless i give them administrative passwords. then they could accidentally delete the whole page rather than make comments, answer questions, etc. does this mean that we still need to have people email us with comments instead of posting them on the wiki?

Nathan from pbwiki here - 'huncooking' is correct, we had an uptime problem around Thanksgiving but we've installed new server infrastructure which should keep things humming along. As for the ads everywhere, we've substantially improved the placement and intrusiveness of the ads - the between paragraphs thing was my (bad) idea and it's gone. Enjoy!

I've set up a wiki with them, but I'm starting to regret it. Uptime is iffy and lately they've started inserting ads everywhere, even between paragraphs.

I've you've got info you think I should include, shoot me an email (address on the page)

yes, i wasn't 100% clear. If you have a wiki password you can edit it and view it. If you don't have the password, you cannot edit it, and you can view it only if it is public.

Unless I'm mistaken, pbwiki has no sense of credentials for individuals. In fact, it has no sense of individuals at all, just a master password for the wiki. With this password, you can log in under any name/email you please and edit the wiki.
