[...] You’ve probably heard of Writely and other similar web-based document creation and collaboration tools. Well, apart from being absolutely thrilled about finally having an easy way to create and share documents between workgroups or committee members across the country (or continent, as the case may be), last night I realized that these tools also fill a very immediate public-service need: instant wordprocessing for library patrons in libraries where no productivity software is available! (duh, I know). What a nice to change to be able to say to patrons, “no, we don’t have Word on our computers, but I can show you a way to take that Word file on your flash drive and edit it online.” Writely has a great set of features and includes much of the formatting functionality that Word provides (via recognizable icons), making the interface transtition a fairly smooth one (a comprehensive review of Writely is available at TechCrunch).
[...] Check out this plug for Writely by Newley: Writely is an exceptionally useful Web-based word processor that I recently discovered. I hate having to fire up MS Word each time I want to jot down some notes, and Writely works right in your Web browser. You can edit HTML formatting, save docs as PDFs, manage collaborative editing, spellcheck, access files via multiple computers, and more. And it’s free, too. Here’s a review of the service on TechCrunch. This sort of application offers a sneak peak at what a Web OS might look like. Bring it on, I say. [...]

This is an excellent idea finally being realised. I had a much simpler tool developed on the Zope/CMF platform by a Danish company. I wish the Writely people would make a Zope/Plone add-on with this facility. It is extremely useful for collaborative work. What we need is an attractive way of doing it, and this looks to be a serious way of doing it.
