Hula - (possibly) a New Ajax Calendar
by Michael Arrington on August 23, 2005

We just heard about a new online calendar application called Hula that’s ajax-based. It hasn’t launched and we can’t find the website for it, but some bloggers are linking to a couple of flash movies that show it in action.

This reminds us of Apple’s iCal. The power of Ajax to make web apps work like desktop apps is awesome.

I just hope it’s cheaper than Trumba, which is charging $40/year.

Update: Thanks to Ross in the comments area, we now have a link to Hula. “Hula is a calendar and mail server whose goal is to be fun and easy to use, while scaling effortlessly from small groups to large organizations with thousands of members. Hula is an open source project led by Novell.”

You’ll be looking for http://www.hula-project.org/Hula_Server then ?

Nat of nat.org is Nat Friedman formerly of Ximian, now of Novell who is also responsible for their integrated to the filesystem desktop search (named Beagle). Just for background :)

I forgot to mention, it is free and you can install your own copy wherever you like - just in case it wasn’t clear.

The Hula Project is an open source groupware application that provides calendaring and mail services that is developed by Novell by a great bunch of GNOME hackers. The website is http://www.hula-project.org/Hula_Server and a great article about it is located here: http://software.newsforge.com/.....mp;tid=132

Hey, thanks for the additional information.

Airset has been up and running and offers a rich shared calendar/tabbed workspace model - that instantly rollsup into one view of your life. It has has features to sync with PDAs and Outlook, and a mobile phone client.

All this is free (no $40/month). The only charges are for the optional phone client.

My problem with any calendar app online (I haven’t tested Hula, but I have tested Trumba, for example) is when you have a lot of data in any given day.

I just haven’t seen a good implementation yet. Especially when you’re talking about tasks that -span- days and not just appointments/events per day (where there’s a pre-defined maximum # of slots available).

I’ve been using Airset for several months and really like it, especially the “free” part. I have a calendar for each member of my family, for work, for a particulra project at work, and one for “fyi/maybe” things, e.g., cousins in town, someone’s birthday, an event I may want to go to.

oh,i like here

have a nice day with you

Has anyone used this yet?

Opinions ?
