[...] The user numbers coming out on Google Talk are staggeringly terrible. Comscore usage numbers show that nearly a year after launch Google is a distant, distant 4th after MSN, Yahoo and AIM. They hold a pitiful 1% of total instant messaging market share, with 3.4 million unique users in May 2006. See the Comscore chart below for more details (I wonder where Skype IM falls in those stats). Note that Comscore does not include Google Talk usage within Gmail itself (where it is embedded), but even factoring that in, the numbers are just awful. [...]

[...] Also, Meebo should be supporting Jabber even in this public alpha product. Jabber is an open protocol and should therefore be the easiest service to implement. By supporting Jabber, Meebo would allow you to access Google Talk (profile) as well. This was pointed out in a comment by Frederico Oliveira on an UneasySilence post on Meebo earlier today.
I don't see a reason why I would want to use Google Talk now when all my friends are on Yahoo/MSN/AIM. (With all of them having some sort of voice/video chat)

I think these guys are too late to start this thing.

Anil, I agree. It's feature set doesn't 'wow' (well except in the small download size 900k!). For me the 'wow' is Google using an open protocol so Mac/Linux etc can use clients like Gaim.
This is a 'get it out there' release. Similar to how Desktop 2 is a vastly more feature rich animal than GDS 1.x is. If they ever build in awareness the possibilities will really jump.

I am surprised by people saying that Google talk is a cool product!! It is definitely weaker than Skype or Yahoo IM for that matter.

Google has built its loyalty based on the ability to "wow" consumers. I dont see any single feature in this product that "wows" me. I am a little shocked as to Google's innovation path or shall we just say copy Yahoo path?
