They are fun to use and they are sexy with a capital SEX, but Appirio is right ... having business application makes a BIG difference to value! Here is a site that applies the genius of the widget concept practically and easily to the business IRO desktop reporting and as a corporate IT asset management tool in the form of PC analytics. It is free to download and test, and if you like the concept it is cheap to use too. The URL is www.blueboxwidget.com

Widgets are interesting and cool enough, but its when they hit the business world they take on a new spin. Check out the series of widgets for Salesforce. They provide an easy way for those that aren't regularily in Salesforce to gain from its visibility. All of a sudden the Sales Executive can keep on top of sales activity in the five minutes between meetings. We created a few of these to test the concept, and early feedback has been very positive. Its just another small tool in the arsenal of user adoption :-)

[...] Small software vendors have a history of getting shafted at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference; remember the kerfuffle over Konfabulator when Apple announced Dashboard in Tiger? In the end I guess it worked out okay for those guys as they flipped to Yahoo. On the eve of WWDC 2006 it looks like the 600lb gorilla of virtualization is releasing a beta of VMware Workstation for Mac. Which perhaps puts Parallels Desktop Mac in a somewhat precarious position if a version of the free VMware Player for Mac is shortly behind. I sincerely hope not, as Parallels’ product is damn impressive; I have been using it for a few weeks since getting a MacBook and would be pretty lost without it at this point. Parallels does have the advantage of being priced more aggressively: $79USD to the $189USD that VMware’s Mac product would be priced at if Windows and Linux pricing is any guide. The feature set of VMware Workstation is definitely more higher-end but it will be interesting to watch how pricing of both of these products on both PC and Mac platforms may change over the coming months. About the only thing that I wish Parallels supported was the ability to open VMware virtual machine images, simply because there are just so many of them out there. [...]

[...] Second, Goowy released a flash-based desktop application that allows you to access core Goowy features without going to the site. Email notifications, RSS updates, calendar items, etc. are included. The look and feel is very much like Konfabulator, but we’ve noticed no performance issues on our machine as we did with that service. [...]
