[...] Yelp launched back in the pre-Mashable era (circa 2004), but after hearing John C. Dvorak evangelising it on the This Week in Tech podcast, I figured I’d take another look. I also dug up this old TechCrunch post which explains how Yelp works: Yelp is a website that allows users to write and share reviews of local businesses. It also has social networking features (adding friends, groups, etc.) to share reviews with a trust network. The idea is that people generally trust their friends’ recommendations…All of this user-generated content on local businesses, combined with the Yelp search engine, also provides great inventory for Yelp to sell local businesses contextual advertising…There are a number of other companies that are targeting local business reviews in an almost identical way. For instance, check out Judy’s Book, profiled previously and idealabs’ InsiderPages. [...]

[...] There are also other services like Insider Pages that are worth taking a look. In fact, TechCrunch has written a review about Yelp just yesterday. Yelp is a service very similar to Insider Pages that allows you to create a network and review local businesses. It is only available for San Francisco as of now though. Another service that you may be interested in that I really like is called, Judy’s Book, which TechCrunch has also reviewed. I highly recommend Judy’s Book. The community their is excellent and their are quite a bit of reviews. [...]

I just received an email from Gabe Othman, the co-founder. I missed their RSS feeds (and they are adding more):

Mike,

I'm not sure if you've seen it, but we have a page on our site that lists out the available RSS feeds:

http://seattle.judysbook.com/rss.aspx

We are currently working on more feeds specific to members, which include friends and groups, as you suggested.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Andy,

Andy, thank you for the comment. I love the site and I think the easiest
short term improvement is to see an RSS feed from all of my "friends" and
"groups" new reviews. The UI is very clean and I think your target audience will love it. I've already emailed my mom to show her. :-)

Good luck and keep us posted as things progress.

We love feedback -- all kinds. We believe that it's what will make us and every other business better. Just have to listen to people. You'll be happy to know that we're already working on a number of your suggestions. Feel free to email me -- I'd welcome a dialogue.

Thanks for noticing all the hard work.
